9-11 in Dallas, was more than 80 percent sold out at the close of last year`s show. Nowhere is the health of the power generation business more evident than with Power Engineering`s annual POWER-GEN International conference and exhibition. I think this change will bring us a different, but healthy industry. International projects abound and, although organizing and bidding such projects are complex and risky, the global companies that populate the industry–and that`s nearly everybody these days–are rising to the occasion. Gas marketers and other new players are entering the business, and old players are pursuing aggressive plans to consolidate their positions and exploit their perceived strategic advantages. These are, typically, smaller in scale than utility plants, but larger in number. While major new utility power projects are nonexistent in the United States, merchant plants and IPPs are forging ahead. In spite of utility downsizings, divestitures and new project paralysis in the midst of significant business uncertainties, the nontraditional pieces of the power generation business appear to be alive and well. But lacking such clairvoyance, I can only observe the signs and try to reach some conclusions based on them.
If I were able to answer these questions definitively, I would probably be rich. Does the current turmoil in the power generation business signal the beginning of the next stage of a dynamic industry`s life, or does it represent the internal churning of a mature industry struggling for survival? Will this be change that ushers in a new era of prosperity for power generation?
